Description: The dataset shows the locations where eelgrass was observed in the Great Bay Estuary based on low-altitude aerial surveillance. The study area includes the following waterbodies: Great Bay, the mouth of the Squamscott River, the tidal portion of the Lamprey, the tidal portion of the Oyster River, the tidal portion of the Bellamy River, the Piscataqua River and Portsmouth Harbor and its associated creeks. Aerial photographs are taken of the study area at 3000 feet at low spring tide with roughly 60% overlap on a calm day without preceding rain events and when the sun is at a low angle to minimize reflection (between 7 am and 10 am). Photographs are taken in late summer, usually late August or early September, depending on tides and weather, to reflect the maximum eelgrass annual biomass. 35 mm film (ASA 200) or a digital camera is used to acquire the images. Typically 300 images are needed to cover the entire Great Bay Estuary. The orientation of the photographs is near-vertical. This is a slight deviation from the NOAA Coastal Change Analysis Program protocol, but follows a published method (Short and Burdick, 1986). The photographs, in the form of 35mm slides or digital computer images, are projected on a screen and the eelgrass images are transferred to a base map. These maps are then digitized using GIS software. The eelgrass habitat mapped from the aerial imagery is verified using the ground truthing data by placing the ground-truthing locations onto the digital image using GIS software. Ground-truthing is done from a small boat during the same season as the photographs are taken. Ground-truth observations are made at low tide. Samples are collected with an eelgrass sampling hook. Positions are determined using GPS. The ground-truth surveys assess 10-20% of the eelgrass beds mapped in the estuary. The aerial survey is completed yearly. The first survey in the series was completed in 1986.

Description: The dataset shows the locations where eelgrass was observed in the Great Bay Estuary based on photointerpretation of orthophotography collected on August 24, 2013. The study area includes the following waterbodies: Great Bay, the mouth of the Squamscott River, the tidal portion of the Lamprey River, the tidal portion of the Oyster River, the tidal portion of the Bellamy River, the Piscataqua River and Portsmouth Harbor and its associated creeks. Vertical aerial photograph was collected as digital 4-band imagery with a nominal 1 foot resolution using a Intergraph Digital Mapping Camera. Environmental conditions included a low sun angle, low spring tide, low cloud cover, calm winds, no preceeding rain events, and low turbitiy in the water column. The eelgrass habitat mapped from the aerial imagery was verified using the ground truthing data from preselected locations and ad hoc locations chosen during the course of the field work. Ground truthing was done from a small boat during the same season as the photographs are taken. Ground truth observations were made on all tides using a drop camera with video recording capabilities and at low tide when visual observations were recorded. Positions are determined using high accuracy Trimble GeoXH and GeoXT GPS units.

Positions are determined using GPS. The ground-truth surveys assess 10-20% of the eelgrass beds mapped in the estuary. The aerial survey is completed yearly. The first survey in the series was completed in 1986.

Description: The mapping shows extensive eelgrass distribution throughout the Great Bay Estuary, except in areas where the photography was not adequate to interpret the images (primarily Portsmouth Harbor, the Oyster River and the upper Bellamy River). As the maps shows, and as verified by the NH Fish and Game maps of the same time frame (Nelson, 1981), there was much more eelgrass in Little Bay and the Piscataqua River in 1981 than 2007. (NH Fish and Game maps were created from boat surveys of eelgrass.) In Little Bay, eelgrass was found on many of the shallow flats as well as deeper areas. In the Piscataqua River, there were eelgrass beds and patches along both the Maine and New Hampshire sides of the river, although the NH Fish and Game mapping only covered the New Hampshire side. In Great Bay, extensive and sometimes dense eelgrass was found, roughly comparable to the 1996 findings, which showed the greatest eelgrass distribution mapped to date. The 1981 eelgrass distribution and cover map for the Great Bay Estuary represents an “earliest available” comprehensive map of the resource, as no earlier photography has been found with adequate tidal conditions to allow eelgrass mapping.

Description: Eelgrass 1980 - NH Fish and Game DepartmentA 8.5x11 inch map of "Major Eelgrass Beds in the Great Bay Estuary" (Nelson et al., 1981) was scanned and georeferenced to the NHD 1:24,000 shoreline layer by The Nature Conservancy for the Great Bay Estuary Restoration Compendium. Because of substantial differences in shorelines between the two sources, this process was accomplished in six steps, working in one area of the estuary at a time and tracing the shapes onscreen to create a new shapefile. Rectifying smaller sections provided relatively good fits, as compared to trying to adjust the entire hand drawn map to the modern shoreline. The combined coverage was developed using the ArcInfo union tool.NH Department of Environmental Services obtained additional information from one of the report authors (Don Miller at NHF&G) in 2009. Mr. Miller reported that the original mapping was done on NOAA charts. Crews moved around by boat and assessed beds with divers using quadrats or what they could see. The survey did not include the tidal rivers. The survey was conducted to assess natural resources damages for the 1979 New Concord oil spill (25,000 gallons) which impacted the whole estuary. Description: Eelgrass 1962 - Maine Geological SurveyThe Nature Conservancy obtained geospatial information from the Maine Geological Survey for the Great Bay Estuary Restoration Compendium. A shapefile containing eeglrass (and salt marsh) data from 1962 was obtained courtesy of Stephen M. Dickson at the Maine Geological Survey (MGS). It was created for the Coastal Maine Geologic Environment (CMGE) survey of eelgrass, salt marsh and five other habitat types for the entire shoreline of Maine. The maps only contain eelgrass beds on the Maine side of the Piscataqua River. The following documentation was provided with the file. Description: Eelgrass 1948 – University of New HampshireA 1949 University of New Hampshire M. Sc. thesis by Stanley Bradley Krochmal contained a carefully drawn eelgrass map that was scanned and rectified to the NHD 1:24000 shoreline by The Nature Conservancy for the Great Bay Estuary Restoration Compendium. Polygons with density codes were traced onscreen from this image. The original map closely matches modern hydrology data and shows extensive eelgrass beds in the Oyster River and other areas where it is no longer found, and some areas, notably the south east shore of Great Bay apparently did not contain eelgrass at the time of his survey. Krochmal indicated that he did survey these areas. Krochmal was likely using primarily shore-based methods at low tide and the absence of eelgrass beds from deeper areas on his maps should be interpreted accordingly. Geospatial information from map, which covers lower Squamscott, all of the Lamprey, all of the Oyster, lower Bellamy, Great Bay, Little Bay, and some of the Upper Piscataqua. General narrative information about the presence of eelgrass in other rivers (e.g. Cocheco, Salmon Falls).Eelgrass densities: P “isolated patches”, S “one quarter of available area covered”, C “one half or over of the site is covered”. Assuming that S is the lowest density that would be mapped by current methods. The full thesis can be downloaded from the UNH Digital Library (http://www.library.unh.edu/digital/).
